Every premium high-end phone comes with different IP ratings but what does it really means, many of us are still confused. Ingress Protection Rating OR International Protection Rating is popularly known as IP rating on devices like smartphones and other wearable devices. These ratings are the standers set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). These codes are designed to classify the degree of protection offered by the enclosures of electrical devices.
The IP rating is followed by the 2 numbers, the first number represents the protection against solid objects like dust. The second number represents the protection against liquid and moisture. The higher the number goes protection gets better.
Fist number goes from 0 – 6 indicating the protection level against solid particles and the second number goes from 0 -8 indicating the protection level again liquid and moisture.
This chart will help you to have a clear understanding of the rating index. If your device has the rating of IP 56 it means you will have all the protection up to the mentioned index.
Only the high-end phone provides the rating of IP68 some of them are Samsung Galaxy S21, OnePlus 9 Pro, and Google Pixel 5. Although taking a phone underwater is still a risky thing. These IP rating and phone testing are done under various lab conditions which it’s differed from the real-world environment so being extra cautious will be a good idea.
